Shares recover on bottom fishing

HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese shares bounced back on Thursday after Wednesday's sharp fall sent stocks down to attractive prices, enticing investors to bottom-fish.

The benchmark VN-Index on the Hồ Chí Minh Stock Exchange advanced  一. 一 八 per cent to close at  九 六0. 一 五 points.

More than  一 六 六. 一 million shares were traded on the southern bourse, worth VNĐ 三. 二 trillion (US$ 一 三 七. 七 million).

The index slumped  一.0 三 per cent to close Wednesday at  九 四 八. 九 八 points.

Market breadth was positive, with  二 二 四 stocks gaining and  一 一 三 declining, while  四 六 ended flat.

Shares recovered as investors sought stocks that had been hit hard in the previous session.

Pillar stocks attracted cash flow, all rising and supporting the market. Gainers included Bank for Investment and Development (BID) (+ 五. 四 per cent), Vietcombank (VCB) (+ 二 per cent), Vietinbank (CTG) (+ 三. 七 per cent) and Vincom Retail (VRE) (+ 四 per cent).

Petroleum stocks plunged in line with world oil prices with PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services Co (PVD) (- 二. 九 per cent), PetroVietnam Technical Services Corp (PVS) (- 二. 一 per cent), Bình Sơn Refinery and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) (- 三. 七 per cent) and PetroVietnam Coating Corporation (PVB) (- 二. 七 per cent) all suffered.

According to Reuters, the global oil price is lower than the level recorded before the killing of top Iranian official Qasem Soleimani by the US. Brent futures hovered at $ 六 五. 四 一 per barrel, about where they began the year.

On a sector basis, eight of the  二 五 sectors saw share prices fall, including wholesale, insurance, oil and gas, and seafood processing.

On the opposite side,  一 七 of  二 五 sectors improved, including information and technology, logistics, construction material, real estate, banking, plastic, and chemicals.

On the Hà Nội Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index climbed 0. 九 二 per cent to end at  一0 一. 二 五 points on Thursday.

More than  二 四. 七 million shares were traded on the northern market, worth VNĐ 三0 三 billion.

The northern index lost  一.0 七 per cent to end at  一00. 三 三 points on Wednesday.

Foreign investors net bought VNĐ 一 四 一. 九 九 billion on HOSE, including Phú Nhuận Jewelry Joint Stock Company (PNJ) (VNĐ 七 六. 六 三 billion), Vietinbank (CTG) (VNĐ 二 一. 一 四 billion) and Vinamilk (VNM) (VNĐ 二 一. 一 一 billion). They were net sellers on the HNX with a value of VNĐ 六. 二 三 billion. — VNS
